It is now possible only to watch webcams other users, but there is no possibility webcam chat. Plans to make an opportunity to communicate with users of instant messaging. Usage

At the command prompt, type

luvcview

You will see the webcam image in the main window. Down the bottom of the screen will be a row of buttons. When you hover your mouse over the buttons, you will see the title bar on the window describe its purpose.

* The button "Take a Picture" will save an image to quickcam.jpg
* The button "AVI Start/Stop" starts/stops saving to a video called video.avi

These items will be saved in the current working directory

Mysteries needing resolution

I have yet to determine how to combine the webcam with other programs like camorama and instant messaging. Any ideas?

Xawtv is known not to work with the Linux UVC driver. It doesn't support V4L2
properly. The latest mplayer version should work, as I sent a patch to fix a
few small problems. You could also try luvcview and ekiga.

* The linux-uvc driver is V4L2-only. This means applications which support V4L1 only will not work. V4L1 is officially deprecated, and have been removed from the kernel recently, so most drivers have or will switch to V4L2 anyway.

Many webcams will "just work" in Ubuntu. There is a USB standard that defines USB streaming video called UVC. This stands for Universal Video Class, and it does for webcams what UMS does for USB memory sticks and hard drives. This allows one driver to work with many webcams. When looking to purchase a webcam for use with Ubuntu, you should look for a UVC compatible camera. The Linux-UVC project has a good list of UVC compatible webcams as well as The Quickcam Team for Logitech cameras.

Testing your webcam

Ekiga is installed by default in Ubuntu, and can be used to test your webcam.

For UVC devices luvcview is a good program you can use to test that the camera is working. If it doesn't work, you may need to update the UVC driver (see Manual install instructions below).

Cheese Camorama, xawtv, VLC, aMSN, and Kopete are in the Ubuntu repositories. They all can be used to test and use your webcam.

In some cases you (VLC, mplayer, amongst others) will need to know the video and audio device files for your webcam. Before you plug in your webcam, try the following two command at a console:

ls /dev/video*
ls /dev/audio*

Make a note of the devices appearing. Now plug in your webcam, allow the system a few seconds to register the device, and run the two commands again. The new appearances should belong to your webcam (for instance, /dev/video0 and /dev/audio2).

Driver installation

If needed, try EasyCam, a tool for installing webcam drivers. If you are unable to manage installing your Webcam using EasyCam, you may try installing your camera manually. At the end of this page are some links to help you with this.

If you are using Intrepid and have a Logitech QuickCam or something else using the gspca driver, see this answer for video4linux 1 compatibility. Note: requires building and installing software from scratch

Additional software

This software is not supported by Ubuntu, and is not available in the repositories.

Recording video

MPlayer / MEncoder

MPlayer is capable of displaying a webcam video stream, for example with the command line

mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0

The resolution (width=??? & height=??? ) should be chosen to match the output of your device, and the device file (/dev/video0) to match your webcam's device file, see above.

The companion to MPlayer, MEncoder can record from a webcam to video files such as AVI, for example without audio:

mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0 -ovc lavc -o webcam.avi

and with audio

mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/dsp1 -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -o webcam.avi

Type 'man mencoder' for more info on the audio options. In the example, /dev/dsp1 refers to the webcam USB Audio device, while /dev/dsp would refer to the sound card.

You may need to install these programs with

VLC

In VLC, choose 'Open capture device' from the file menu and enter the video and audio device files (see above) in video device name and audio device name, respectively. If you just want a 'mirror' (to see what the webcam is showing), click 'OK' and you're done. If you wish to record, tick off 'Stream/save' in the 'Advanced options' section. Click the settings button right next to it. Tick 'File' off under 'Outputs' and enter a filename. Encapsulation method can be left at the default (MPEG TS). Under 'Transcoding options', tick 'Audio codec' and 'Video codec'. These can also safely be left the defaults (obviously greater compression results in lower file sizes, so experiment). Click 'OK' in the Settings screen and once again in the main webcam screen (Video4linux). If you want to have more control, you can access several settings, including resolution, by clicking the Advanced options button.

If you wish to be able to quickly start a video session with your webcam, the resulting vlc command is printed in the Customize line at the bottom. You simply need to prepend 'vlc', e.g.

The recording instructions will similarly need to be appended. Copy the contents of the 'Stream Output MRL' box under 'Settings' and change ":sout=" to "--sout " and append it to your vlc command:, e.g.

To simple take a few snapshots, open the webcam without recording and choose 'Snapshot' under the 'Video' menu.

Intrepid/Updated Hardy current issues with webcams

With Intrepid and Hardy fully updated, several issues were presented with previously working webcams. The root causes for this issues were several webcam modules merged into the kernel from 2.6.26 and 2.6.27, libv4l modifications, gstreamer modifications and changes in Ubuntu's kernel.

Almost all the issues present at this time (14/12/08) are detected with corresponding bug reports, some of them are solved, and some others are in the process of getting them solved.

We are working hard to uncover and solve the remaining issues, so please bear with us in the meantime.

I'm listing here the issues organized by kernel module. So you've got to check which module your camera uses in order to check for the workaround or corresponding report.

Stream. Webcam-List.com is working! We eventually launched our Stream project. Now you can register and view webcams for users from all over the world, also you can start your own broadcasts. This is absolutely free!

Getting it Live! How to refresh the image...

Once you've decided which kind of WebCam are you going to set up, you need to know how to make it refresh the image...

Refreshing the image

To get the latest shot captured by the WebCam, users connecting to your page will have to Reload it, unless you add some extra HTML, Javascript code or Java applets which will autoreload the picture after a user-definable period (this does not apply to the Server push method, since it is continously streaming a video feed).

META tag command: The oldest method (still in use though) of refreshing a WebCam image on a Web page is made via a set of HTML commands.

There is an HTML tag than can make a web page to auto reload after a period of time (in seconds) is reached. The syntax for this tag is as follows:

Where seconds is the number of seconds it will take the browser to Reload the current page.

The most significant disadvantage of this method is that the whole page is reloaded, so a heavy graphics site will be a pain to reload on slow connections and will result on high bandwith (Internet connection) usage.

Alternatively, you can use this method if you fit the image into a FRAMESET tag, that is, compose a web page with FRAMES, so a very little frame is used to store the HTML code for both the image and the META tag. Later on this tutorial you'll visit some samples of this method.

If, however, you don't like frames, then you'll need to switch to the use of Java Applets.

Tip: There are some old browsers with a small bug which doesn't allow to refresh an image after some reloads. This is not our intention (we want the pic updated all the time), so Jason Millers gives us some input on this issue:

"I had the cache bug annoying me in my WebCam page. I added the following to the header and it works now:"

JavaScript Refresh: The natural evolution to HTML tags is the JavaScript language, which will make JUST the image to refresh.

By inserting a small set of JavaScript instructions into the HTML page, you'll be able to refresh JUST the image, without the aid of any other third party component (program). Note that the visitor to your WebCam page will have to enable JavaScript in order to see the image changing (nowadays, 90% of the audience does have JavaScript enabled). You'll find more about JavaScript later on this tutorial. This method is probably the hardest to set up if you're new to WebCams and HTML.

Java Applets: Small programs embeded inside a Web page, executed in realtime, which will load the WebCam images freeing the browser form that job.

There are tons of Java Applets built by the users itself or by third party companies. All of them have one thing in common: you can put them anywhere (almost! ;) in your WebCam page and they'll refresh the image for you, without refreshing the whole page; just the image.

The main idea is to put the HTML codes to call the applet where you want the image displayed and configure its parameters.

May be, one of the most spreaded Java Applets in the Net (and easy to set up too) is the JavaCam Applet (its usage is well explained in the next sections of this tutorial).

We also recommend to take a look at AnfyCam Java Applet, part of a collection of Java applets for your Web pages. The good point of this applet is that has a nice graphical interface where you enter the parameters and it does generate the necessary HTML and Java files, ready to be uploaded to your server.

Streaming or Snapshot WebCam?

Before getting live, you'll need to decide if you want (and can) handle a streaming cam or not. "What is a Steaming WebCam?" you ask... well, name says it all: a WebCam where you see (live) streaming video, video flowing like it would in a TV... or at least this is what streaming WebCams try... The truth is that the Internet is STILL too young to handle soo much traffic. You'll need a lot of bandwith to send streaming video at a reasonable rate and quality.

So basically here are the INs and OUTs of each system, put feet on earth, stuck with the current present of the technology and decide for yourself:

Streaming WebCams: the nice part of the streaming WebCams is that they stream (or at least try to). Streaming means you see the images of the WebCam in a continuous motion (like in a TV) but the reality is that the image quality tends to be poor and the motion is not as smooth as the TV. This method consumes a lot of resources and it's not as easy to set up as the snapshot WebCams...

Snapshot WebCams: the bad part of these WebCams is that the image is only refreshed every xx seconds, there's no continuous motion like in a TV. The good part is that the quality is superb, the resources are minimal and they're very easy to set up (compared to the Streaming ones).

As usual, everything will depend on what we want to do, for whom and which are our resources.

It is important, at this point, to consider the image size of the shots being taken by the WebCam: the greater the image, the lower the refresh rate. A 640x480 (width x height) image can be great to show an amazing panorama, but imagine a poor user with a very slow Internet connection and a Refresh Rate of 3 seconds! Different pieces of hardware and software allow different capture sizes.

A reasonable user-accessible image size can be 320x240 if you plan to refresh the image each 20-30 seconds. If you want lower refresh rates, try with an image size of 160x120, which will let you refresh rates of up to 10 seconds.

The recommended image file format is JPEG files (.JPG). You can play in your WebCam software with its qualitty ratio and may be you can steal some extra bytes to reduce image's size.

For video streams, try to keep an image size of 160x120 so slow Internet connections can have a chance of seeing something.

Different Internet methods for different results!

The main objective now is to know which are the resources available to you on your connection to the Net. Due to obvious reasons, we can't offer support for each Internet account around the World, but we'll try to explain which are the actual possibilities. So you may want to check first with your ISP which limitations do you have regarding bandwith consumption and if you can afford a 24 hours connection to the Net.

Client pull

This method is the most used by WebCam users to show single snapshots of whatever the WebCam points to. It is the most easy method to set up, and the one that works perfectly for dial-up style Internet connections. It also won't take much bandwith from your connection, so you're still able to surf the Web, get e-mail, IRCing and many more things while your WebCam snaps shots. Thus, you won't be able to serve video feeds with this method.

This method is usually accomplished with an FTP connection that sends the last shot captured by the WebCam to your ISP's hard drive or site hosting your web pages.

Server push

This is the most resource-consuming method, and thus, the least implemented. But it is also the most live method, as it will allow the users to view real-time video streams coming directly from your WebCam. It has its obvious limitations; to mention some:

* It requires a high bandwith connection to be at least a bit live.
* You must put a limit to the video stream for each user connecting to it.
* A dial-up connection is almost useless to apply this method.
* Firewall based networks can have limited the access to this kind of method.
* Only the most recent browser versions support Server push.

So, to set up a properly Server push WebCam, you'll need a fixed IP (dynamic IP's are NOT impossible, but you need more resources, as explained before) and a small Server push software.

LAN files

If you're so lucky you operate in a LAN connected to the Internet and a small web server running in it, you can make your webcam page to point directly to locally saved images captured by your webcam software.
